Raise your hand if you've ever been personally victimised by any fancy machines at your work or around the house? Now, raise a hand if you've gone out of your way to avoid using these machines because you're absolutely terrified of using them? Whether it's from a lack of proper instruction, fear of breaking it, or general anxiety of the unknown, let me give you some advice - it's probably best to let a professional do it. Here are some reasons why not to use tools, especially concrete cutting machines, by yourself.

The name itself 'concrete cutting machine' already makes my heart beat faster, honestly. I don't even have to Google what one looks like to know that it will have big, sharp blades that could literally saw your arm off. And that's only one of many horrible outcomes that could wrong.

To start with, these machines are heavy, if you're not using a trolley that is. Working out at the gym can only do you so many favours when these tools weigh between 10-15kgs, can have uncontrollable movements, AND be attached to a blade as big as a dinner plate.

Obviously, there's a lot of safety requirements enforced by Worksafe that revolve around the use of a machine like this. And who can blame them!? That's why it's super important to own and wear the right personal protective equipment. I know! As if there isn't enough risk with the blades, forgetting the simplest of items such as safety goggles, dust masks, and ear muffs could make a huge difference on your mental and physical health long term.

So, you've checked your uniform and equipment, but have you checked your environment? That is, do you know what concrete you're actually cutting in to? There's a reason why 'Dial Before You Dig' is a mandatory requirement for professionals before starting the job - to minimise risk to yourself, your team, and the public as well. Anything from gas and electricity cables to optic fibres and NBN lines could be hiding under the surface. I can't even stand being zapped by a bug zapper or an electric fence, so the thought of anything bigger is intimidating to say the least.

In addition, knowing your environment also comes with the territory of knowing your tools too. Are you going to cut the concrete dry or wet? Do you know the differences? Do you know the pros and cons for your situation? I don't! Similarly, do you know when are where to use different blades? Are they in good condition or need of servicing? Do you know how to change the blades? There's no point spending your money buying one if it takes you half an hour to find the pull cord to start the machine ....only to realise there's a simple on button.

Basically, like any other form of technology, these machines can smell your fear. Don't risk it, just call a professional. Not only will they take the danger out of cutting your concrete floor or path, they'll also cut it straight and smooth.
